Lancaster railway station, operated by Virgin Trains, serves the city of Lancaster and lies on the West Cost Main Line which connects London to the West Midlands, the North West, North Wales and the Central Belt of Scotland. The station has a staffed ticket office although passengers should note that it is not open in the late evening. Passengers are able to collect tickets purchased in advance (for example, on the internet) from one of the automatic ticket machines located in the station.

Passenger services calling at the station are operated by several rail companies: Virgin Trains who operate express trains, First TransPennine Express who operate regional express services, and Northern Rail who operate local services. Between them passengers are offered a wide range of destinations which includes London Euston, Glasgow Central, Edinburgh, Birmingham New Street, Crewe, Manchester Airport, Preston, Barrow-in-Furness, Morecambe, Skipton and Leeds.

Parking is available at the station for 147 vehicles and is open 24 hours a day.

Leeds railway station is operated by Network Rail and is located on the Leeds Branch of the East Coast Main Line, which connects London, Peterborough, Doncaster, Wakefield, Leeds, York, Darlington, Newcastle and Edinburgh, and also on a number of other lines including the Midland Main Line, the Caldervale Line and the Huddersfield Line. Passenger services calling at the station are operated by CrossCountry, East Coast, East Midlands Trains, First TransPennine Express and Northern Rail.

The station has 17 platforms, making it the largest by number of platforms in England outside London. There are 11 terminus and six through platforms and most platforms are subdivided into up to four sections, i.e. 1a, 1b, 1c etc.

The station is located on New Station Street to the south of City Square, at the bottom of Park Row, behind the landmark Queens Hotel. Parking is available at the station for 299 vehicles and is open 24 hours a day.
