Lille Overview

Lille hosted European City 2004, with a mix of old and new architecture, this city has a great dynamic to it- With plenty to visit and see Lille is also a very vibrant city on the constant move and developing with time.

The city is swamped by locals as well as tourists on the first weekend of September for an event named ‘La Braderie’, imagine a gigantic car boot sale without the cars and everyone selling of from the pavements for a whole 2 days and 2 nights! This weekend is like a huge party full of people from all around the country and abroad! This event is one of many events in Lille, the largest town in le Nord Pas de Calais.

This city is a very welcoming city, with plenty to do to keep you busy the entire weekend and more!

Food and Drink in Lille

The centre of Lille hosts a large amount of cafes from which you can watch the world go by throughout
the year with their outdoor heated terraces. You can have a snack in most of these café, however if you are
looking for a restaurant you should venture towards the Palais des Congres, in the back streets where
many restaurants can be found amongst shops and pedestrian streets. All type of food can be found
and therefore you will not have any problem to find something to your taste- Red meat and charcuterie
is not to be missed if you are a meat lover!

Nighlife in Lille

Lille is a very vibrant and young town hosting a number of universities. With various bars and nightclubs scattered around town you will not have trouble finding a lively place. You can either go towards le Vieux Lille where you will find some late night bars in some small street- definitely not seedy as well as towards Rue Gambetta , street full of bars, from live music, to Irish bars.

Shopping in Lille

Lille is a fantastic place to visit for shopping and bargains!
There are two places to go in Lille for the shopping. By positioning yourself at La Grand Place you
will be at the centre of a number of small pedestrian streets from which you will be able to find various clothes, shoes, bag shops as well as the Furet Du Nord, the biggest library in the Nord Pas de Calais and La FNAC, which is the biggest electrical and music shop in the area. The second area to visit for smaller and
more pricey boutiques is the Old town 'Vieux Lille', also pedestrian and very quaint.
There is also a place nearby Lille, Roubaix,a suburban town where the factory outlets are found and therefore great bargains, the place to find these is called 'L’Usine'.

Attractions in Lille

Amongst all the places that are to visit and see in Lille, here are a few not to miss: The Museum of Modern Arts, The Befroit from which you can see the whole town, l’Hospice Comptesse, le Museum of Natural History, as well as its amazing buildings such as l’Opera, la Vielle Bourse and 'le Vieux Lille' the old town. If you are wanting to visit in September pick the first weekend of the month as Lille hosts the biggest Braderie in Nord Pad de Calais.

Transortation in Lille is very well served. With the Metro (undergroung) going everywhere across town and more extentions still growing the network, where ever it is you are looking to go is of easy reach! There also numerous buses and trams going across town.
