The station is the southern terminus of the West Coast Main Line which connects London to the West Midlands, the North West, North Wales and the Central Belt of Scotland. The station is also the London terminus for London Midland services and for services on the Watford DC Line. The station has a staffed ticket office and passengers are also able to collect tickets purchased in advance (for example, on the internet) from one of the automatic ticket machines located in the station.

Passenger services departing the station are operated by First ScotRail, London Midland and Virgin Trains.
