The station is the busiest in Manchester and plans exist to further enhance the station's facilities and capacity as part of the Northern Hub and High Speed 2 plans. The station has a staffed ticket office and passengers are also able to collect tickets purchased in advance (for example, on the internet) from one of the automatic ticket machines located in the station.

The main entrance leads to a concourse with ground floor and mezzanine levels. The Fairfield Street entrance leads to the Metrolink station in the undercroft and is linked to the rail platforms by escalators.

The service takes passengers from the high-level railway station concourse, over a dual carriageway and into the terminal buildings. It has a length of 585 meters (1,919 ft), is free to use. The journey time is 90 seconds. Under cover walkways, escalators and Travelators connect the National Exhibition Centre buildings to the railway station and to the Air-Rail Link, which in turn connects to Birmingham International Airport.
