The main entrance to the station is at the bottom of the station approach, a ramp off the bridge that carries Fishergate over the railway. The ticket office exists within the small concourse. This concourse gives direct access, down the ramp, to the intercity platforms 3 and 4.

Passenger services generally depart towards Blackpool North, Blackpool South, Burnley, Liverpool Lime Street, Manchester Victoria, York, Lancaster, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Warrington, Birmingham International, Manchester Piccadilly, Manchester Airport and London Euston. The station was first named Lancaster Castle station in order to distinguish it from the original Lancaster Station. The station opened in September 1846 with the first public service operating later the same year. The station was built as the southern terminus of the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway after the initial planned route for the line - following the Lancaster Canal and crossing the River Lune from Ladies Walk to Skerton - was changed in favour of a cheaper route west of the city.
